The University of Illinois football team’s 5-0 start has made many people happy in Illini Nation. But one of the happiest among them is probably new athletic director Mike Thomas. Before the season started many people thought that head coach Ron Zook was on the hot seat, especially with a AD coming in. But my belief is that a quality person like Thomas would prefer not to a coaching change so early in his career at Illinois. He has to heading up a different athletic program at a different university. There are so many aspects to the job it could take a year for Thomas to be fully acclimated to his job. Adding a search for a new coach to his agenda is the last thing Thomas needs. The success of the Illinois football team is allowing Mike Thomas to concentrate on other things, such as renovation of Assembly Hall.
